Intel has made improvements to XeSS by releasing an updated version 1.3.1 of the Intel XeSS SDK for its image scaling technology. The update includes bug fixes and improved stability. However, the technology still lacks its own frame generation feature.
According to Tom’s Hardware, on only "Bug fixes and stability improvements" are mentioned, so there isn't much detail about the new features. The previous version, XeSS SDK 1.3.0, released on April 4, introduced new AI models, new Ultra and Native image quality presets, and increased the resolution scaling for all existing graphics presets.
However, XeSS still lags behind competing solutions from NVIDIA and AMD. Unlike DLSS and FSR, Intel's technology still does not have its own frame generation feature. XeSS users have to rely on games that support both XeSS and AMD's FSR 3 frame generation technology.
Despite trailing in some aspects, XeSS support in games is gradually expanding. The technology is often found in game ports from PlayStation to PC, as well as in major AAA and AA projects. Official reports state that XeSS is supported in 105 games. However, a search on shows that the technology is already present in 228 products, including demos and benchmarks.
A positive aspect of Intel XeSS compared to AMD FSR 3 is the ability to use artificial intelligence to enhance image quality. This gives XeSS a slight edge in image quality over AMD FSR and brings it closer to the market leader, Nvidia DLSS. However, if AMD FSR starts utilizing built-in hardware for AI in its graphics processors, this advantage may quickly disappear.
It is important to note that although the Intel XeSS SDK is available on GitHub, the complete source code of XeSS remains closed. Intel does not provide all the necessary files for the technology to work in the open, keeping them secret, even though more than a year has passed since XeSS was released.
