On July 14, 1992, the first working release (0.1) of the 386BSD operating system was published, offering a BSD UNIX implementation for i386 processors based on the work of 4.3BSD Net/2. The system featured a simplified installer, included a full networking stack, a modular kernel, and a role-based access control system. In March 1993, due to the desire to make the patch acceptance process more open and to unify support for various architectures, the NetBSD fork was formed based on 386BSD 0.1, and in June 1993, the FreeBSD project was established based on 4.3BSD-Lite ‘Net/2’ and 386BSD 0.1, incorporating the patches that were not accepted into 386BSD.
