As part of the Proton project, developers from Mozilla plan to remove the compact panel display mode from the interface settings (the 'hamburger' menu in the panel -> Customize -> Density -> Compact), leaving only the normal mode and the touch screen mode. The compact mode uses smaller buttons and removes unnecessary gaps around panel elements and the tab area to free up additional vertical space for content.
The reason mentioned for this decision is the desire to simplify the interface and offer a layout that suits the majority of users. It is noted that the compact mode switch is quite difficult to find in the settings and, in the developers' opinion, very few people use this mode (in analyzing telemetry, developers overlook that those who change the default settings tend to disable telemetry sharing more actively and fall out of the statistics).
According to Mozilla, 93.3% of users utilize screens with a vertical resolution of 768 pixels and above, so it has been decided to use 768 pixels as the minimum height for optimization — 92 pixels will be allocated for the tab panel and address bar (in the new design, the panel will be thinner than it currently is in normal mode). With the classic menu disabled, 88% of vertical space will be dedicated to content, not considering the operating system panels and not taking into account that some users do not maximize the window. Considering the trend of modern websites to stick headers and display a dialog at the bottom warning about cookie usage, which can only be accepted but not refused, navigation on laptops with small widescreen displays resembles a view from a loophole.
