Mozilla has warned of changes to the Firefox Add-ons directory (Mozilla AMO) aimed at enhancing user security and privacy, as well as addressing new ecosystem needs. The new edition of the directory rules will come into effect on December 1, 2021.
Key changes:
- The collection of user activity information while navigating websites, such as data on viewed URLs, browsing history, and information entered on pages, is only allowed in add-ons that explicitly state this functionality as a primary feature. Covert collection of user activity data remains prohibited.
- The addons.mozilla.org directory prohibits the placement of add-ons that are limited to functions for promotion, downloading, installing, or opening another website, web application, or add-on.
- Only the creation of encrypted communication channels is permitted for interaction with external services. Previously, the use of HTTPS in add-ons was required only when transmitting sensitive data, and is now extended to all communications.
- The section concerning cookie access rules has been removed. It is no longer necessary to display a confirmation request for additional permissions when using cookies before the first launch of the add-on. However, such a request remains mandatory if the use of cookies implies access to or accumulation of technical data, user activity information, or personal data.
