Anthropic, a company promoting the family of large language models Claude, has acquired a startup developing an open JavaScript platform Bun, presented as a high-performance alternative to Node.js and Deno platforms. The main reason for the acquisition is to ensure the stable development of the Bun platform, which is utilized in Claude Code and Claude Agent SDK products. After the deal is finalized, the project will remain open and publicly developed on GitHub, continue to be distributed under the MIT license, be supported and developed by the same team, and maintain its priorities (focus on high performance and compatibility with Node.js).
The Bun project is written in Zig and C++ and is developed with an eye toward ensuring compatibility with server applications for Node.js, supporting most of the Node.js API. The platform includes a set of tools for creating and running applications in JavaScript and TypeScript, as well as a runtime for executing JavaScript applications without a browser, a package manager (compatible with NPM), a testing toolkit, a system for building self-sufficient packages, and a layer for embedding handlers written in C. In terms of performance, Bun significantly outperforms Deno and Node.js (in tests based on the React framework, the Bun platform is twice as fast as Deno and almost five times faster than Node.js). For executing JavaScript, the JavaScript engine JavaScriptCore and components from the WebKit project with additional patches are used.
