VG247 published a video comparing the classic version of Mafia II with Mafia II: Definitive Edition. Journalists took the same locations from both projects and showed the difference between the original and the remaster. The updated version of the crime drama excels in all parameters, which is evident in almost every frame showcased.

The video features the initial episodes from the game: the protagonist Vito Scaletta's family's move from Sicily to the USA, his participation in World War II, and his return to Empire Bay. Right at the beginning of the video, viewers can see the changes present in Mafia II: Definitive Edition. The remaster boasts high-quality textures, which are especially noticeable in close-ups that are abundant in the game's engine cutscenes. In the classic version, they are blurred, while in the updated version, the sharpness is significantly higher. Improvements were also made to the textures of small objects, such as household items, flags, and cobblestones.

Among the other advantages of the remaster over the original, it's worth noting the refined visual effects. The snow appears more realistic, showing traces from cars and people. However, the blood splattering from enemies when they are wounded remains largely unchanged.
Mafia II: Definitive Edition also improved volumetric lighting, making it softer, along with the color palette. Now there are more shades visible on the screen.

Mafia II: Definitive Edition was released on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PS4, and Xbox One yesterday, May 19, simultaneously with Mafia III: Definitive Edition. On the Valve platform, the game has 198 reviews, 65% of which are positive. Users complain about the presence of minor bugs, technical issues, and models that have not been properly remade.
