The candidate release of the installer for the next significant Debian release 'Bullseye' has been published. The release is expected in summer 2021. Currently, there are 185 critical bugs blocking the release (240 a month ago, 472 three months ago, 316 at the freeze in Debian 10, 275 in Debian 9, 350 in Debian 8, and 650 in Debian 7). The final release of Debian 11 is expected in summer.
Key changes in the installer compared to the third alpha release:
- The eatmydata package has been added, allowing faster package installation by disabling fsync (dpkg frequently calls fsync during installation, causing delays).
- The graphical installer now uses libinput instead of the evdev driver, improving touchpad support. Support for libwacom has been removed, as its functionality is now provided by the libinput package.
- Linux kernel updated to version 5.10.
- The iso images now include the wireless-regdb-udeb and libinih1-udeb packages.
- The list-devices-linux package now supports disk partitions on USB UAS devices.
- The grub2 now supports the SBAT mechanism (UEFI Secure Boot Advanced Targeting), addressing issues with certificate revocation for UEFI Secure Boot.
- The limitation on the maximum line length in Packages and Sources files has been removed.
- The udeb nic-modules now includes a bonding driver, and efivars has been removed from efi-modules.
- Efforts have been made to reduce memory consumption.
- The os-prober now detects Microsoft operating systems on ARM64 platforms.
- The partman-btrfs now provides minimal support for subvolumes for the root directory.
- The use of underscore in the username specified for the first account has been allowed.
- Support for ARM boards puma-rk3399, Orange Pi One Plus, ROCK Pi 4 (A, B, C), Banana Pi BPI-M2-Ultra, Banana Pi BPI-M3 has been added.
- A new Homeworld theme has been implemented.
