At the XDC2019 conference in Montreal, the head of the Khronos consortium, Neil Trevett, the situation regarding open graphics drivers. He confirmed that developers can certify their driver versions for free to comply with OpenGL, OpenGL ES, OpenCL, and Vulkan standards.
Importantly, they will not have to pay any fees or join the consortium. Interestingly, applications can be submitted for both purely hardware and software implementations.
After certification, the drivers will be added to the list of products that are officially compatible with Khronos specifications. As a result, this will allow independent developers to use Khronos trademarks and proclaim support for all necessary standards.
Note that earlier, Intel certified Mesa drivers with a separate application. The Nouveau project still lacks official support from NVIDIA, which raises several questions about it.
Thus, more and more companies are using open source in their work and products. This helps save on development and also support open products. The latter is cheaper than creating a proprietary alternative from scratch.
The emergence of officially certified graphics drivers for Linux and Unix will enable more applications and games to be available on these platforms, which currently may experience issues.
