The first commercial underwater data center in China, created by HiCloud Data Center Technology (a subsidiary of Highlander), has confirmed its operational capability. According to Datacenter Dynamics citing Chinese media, the system has been functioning steadily since it was commissioned at the end of last year. Moreover, HiCloud reported that it has received orders from China Telecom and SenseTime to build similar data centers in other regions of the country. The data center in question is located off the coast of Sanya (Hainan Island). The project involves the use of special modules weighing about 1300 tons with equipment, which are installed at a depth of approximately 35 meters. The first unit was installed in April 2023, and the second one in November of last year.
