Recently, the largest Chinese OEM and ODM manufacturer of various flash drives, Longsys, celebrated its 20th anniversary. During the festive events, In particular, the company Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC) was mentioned among many partners supplying flash chips and controllers. Recall that this is the first manufacturer of 3D NAND flash memory in China. Currently, YMTC is supplying limited batches of 32-layer 3D NAND and is preparing to produce 64-layer chips by the end of the year. Using YMTC chips, Longsys plans to soon start producing '100% Chinese' flash drives.
For SSD and memory card controllers, Longsys also utilizes developments from Chinese companies. These include controllers from developers such as Yeetor Microelectronics and Maxio Technology. The packaging of chips will be handled by Payton Technology and Zhen Kun Technology. Together with local partners, Longsys aims to nurture a memory chip, controller, and related product industry in China. It should not be assumed that the company is not considering exporting these products abroad. As early as 2017, Longsys partnered with Micron on the production of flash drives and the well-known western brand Lexar. In the USA, Europe, and other regions of the world, this entirely Chinese product may appear under its familiar brand there and will not trigger rejection.
Returning to YMTC memory, let's clarify that in November 2018, Longsys established a strategic partnership agreement with YMTC's 'parent' company, Tsinghua Unigroup. The latter plans to supply Longsys with both YMTC and Intel manufactured memory from their factory in Dalian through its subsidiaries. It is interesting to see if the use of YMTC and Intel memory will be marked on Longsys flash drives.
