Canonical has launched a campaign to promote Ubuntu as a replacement for CentOS on servers used in the infrastructure of companies providing financial services. This initiative follows Red Hat's decision to cease updates for classic CentOS 8 as of December 31, 2021, in favor of the CentOS Stream testing project.
Although Red Hat Enterprise Linux and CentOS have secured a strong position in the financial services sector, fundamental changes in CentOS may prompt financial companies to reconsider their operating system choices. Among the points mentioned in attempts to encourage the financial services industry to transition from CentOS to Ubuntu are:
- A predictable release schedule.
- Corporate-level support with updates released for 10 years, kernel updates without rebooting, and SLA.
- High performance and versatility.
- Security and certification of the cryptographic stack to meet FIPS 140-2 Level 1 requirements.
- Suitability for use in private and public cloud systems.
- Kubernetes support. Available in Google GKE, Microsoft AKS, and Amazon EKS CAAS as the reference platform for Kubernetes.
