Canonical has announced its readiness for the widespread use of the Ubuntu Pro service, which provides access to extended updates for Ubuntu LTS branches. The service allows updates with vulnerability fixes to be received for 10 years (the standard support period for LTS branches is 5 years) for an additional 23,000 packages, beyond those in the Main repository. Ubuntu Pro also grants access to live patches, enabling updates to be applied to the Linux kernel without rebooting.
A free subscription to Ubuntu Pro is available for individuals and small businesses with up to 5 physical hosts in their infrastructure (the program also covers all virtual machines, deployed on those hosts). Official members of the Ubuntu community can receive free access for 50 hosts. The cost of a paid subscription is $25 per year for each workstation and $500 per year for server. To obtain access tokens for the Ubuntu Profree service, an Ubuntu One account is required, which can be created by anyone.
