Cloudflare has announced the release of a version of the WARP application for Linux, combining a DNS resolver using the 1.1.1.1 DNS service, a VPN, and a proxy to redirect traffic through Cloudflare's content delivery network infrastructure. The VPN traffic is encrypted using the WireGuard protocol implemented by BoringTun, written in Rust and operating entirely in user space.
A distinguishing feature of WARP is its tight integration with the content delivery network. Cloudflare provides a content delivery network for 25 million internet resources, handling traffic for 17% of the 1000 largest websites. If a resource is served through Cloudflare, accessing it via WARP will result in faster content delivery than routing through a provider's network.
Besides VPN Several operating modes are available, allowing, for example, to encrypt only DNS queries (enable DNS-over-HTTPS) or run WARP in proxy mode, accessible via HTTPS or SOCKS5. Additionally, filters can be activated to block access to resources identified as having malicious activity or adult content.
Prepackaged versions of WARP for Linux are available for Ubuntu (16.04, 20.04), Debian (9, 10, 11), Red Hat Enterprise Linux (7, 8), and CentOS. There are plans to expand the number of supported distributions in the future. The program is presented as a console utility warp-cli.
