Intel has handed over the Cloud Hypervisor, optimized for use in cloud systems, to the Linux Foundation, whose infrastructure and services will be utilized in its further development. This transition to the Linux Foundation will free the project from dependence on a single commercial company and simplify collaboration with external participants. Companies such as Alibaba, ARM, ByteDance, and Microsoft have already announced their support for the project, with representatives from these companies, alongside developers from Intel, forming a governing project council.
As a reminder, Cloud Hypervisor provides a monitor running on top of KVM and MSHV of virtual machines (VMM), written in Rust and based on components from the joint Rust-VMM project, allowing for the creation of hypervisors tailored for specific tasks. The project enables the launching of guest systems (Linux, Windows) using paravirtualized devices based on virtio, with minimized use of emulation. Key objectives mentioned include: high responsiveness, low memory consumption, high performance, simplified configuration, and reduced potential attack vectors. Migration support is available of virtual machines between servers and hot plugging for virtual machines of CPU, memory, and PCI devices. x86-64 and AArch64 architectures are supported.
