Valve has released Proton 6.3-5, a package for running Windows games on Linux.

Valve has released version 6.3-5 of the Proton project, which is based on the Wine project and aims to enable the launch of gaming applications developed for Windows on Linux, featured in the Steam catalog. The project developments are distributed under the BSD license.

Proton allows for the direct launch of gaming applications in the Linux Steam client that are only supplied for Windows. The package includes implementations of DirectX 9/10/11 (based on the DXVK package) and DirectX 12 (based on vkd3d-proton), operating through the translation of DirectX calls into the Vulkan API, provides improved game controller support, and enables fullscreen mode regardless of the resolutions supported by the games. To enhance the performance of multithreaded games, support for mechanisms such as 'esync' (Eventfd Synchronization) and 'futex/fsync' is implemented.

In the new version:

  • Changes have been made to improve rendering quality in the games Bloodstained, Deep Rock Galactic, The Medium, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Resident Evil 2 (2019), Resident Evil 3 (2020), and Team Sonic Racing.
  • DXVK (1.9) and vkd3d-proton have been updated.
  • DXGI, provided in DXVK, is used for selecting the default GPU.
  • Controller support has been enhanced in Hades and many other games based on the Unity engine.
  • Support for the following games has been added:

    • Crypt Stalker,
    • Dark Devotion,
    • Dorfromantic,
    • Far Cry,
    • Hard Reset,
    • Hogs of War,
    • Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes,

    • Secret of Mana,
    • Trainz Railroad Simulator 2019.
  • Issues clicking on links in CyberPunk 2077 and Darksburg have been resolved.
  • Crashes during the launch of Conan Exile and other games from Funcom have been fixed.
  • The sound issue in Project Cars 3 has been resolved.
  • Support for builds based on containers, outside the virtual machine in which the build was run, has been improved.
