Valve has released version 6.3-7 of the Proton project, which is based on the work of the Wine project and aims to enable the running of gaming applications created for Windows on Linux, available in the Steam catalog. The project's developments are licensed under the BSD license.
Proton allows for the direct launch of gaming applications in the Linux Steam client that are only supplied for Windows. The package includes implementations of DirectX 9/10/11 (based on the DXVK package) and DirectX 12 (based on vkd3d-proton), operating through the translation of DirectX calls into the Vulkan API, provides improved game controller support, and enables fullscreen mode regardless of the resolutions supported by the games. To enhance the performance of multithreaded games, support for mechanisms such as 'esync' (Eventfd Synchronization) and 'futex/fsync' is implemented.
In the new version:
- Support for the following games has been added:
- Life is Strange: True Colors;
- Quake Champions;
- Divinity Original Sin 2;
- eFootball PES 2021;
- EVERSLAUGHT VR;
- WRC 8, 9, and 10.
- The DXVK package, implementing DXGI (DirectX Graphics Infrastructure), Direct3D 9, 10, and 11, which operates via calling translations in the Vulkan API, has been updated to version 1.9.2.
- The VKD3D-Proton version has been updated, a branch from the vkd3d codebase, created to improve Direct3D 12 support in Proton.
- Windowed mode support has been improved in the game Forza Horizon 4.
- Support for the Logitech G920 racing wheel has been established in the game F1 2020.
- Issues with screen settings in the game Resident Evil Village have been resolved.
