Valve has released the Proton 7.0 project, which is based on the Wine codebase and aims to enable the launch of Windows games available in the Steam catalog on Linux. The project's developments are distributed under the BSD license.
Proton allows for the direct launch of gaming applications in the Linux Steam client that are only supplied for Windows. The package includes implementations of DirectX 9/10/11 (based on the DXVK package) and DirectX 12 (based on vkd3d-proton), operating through the translation of DirectX calls into the Vulkan API, provides improved game controller support, and enables fullscreen mode regardless of the resolutions supported by the games. To enhance the performance of multithreaded games, support for mechanisms such as 'esync' (Eventfd Synchronization) and 'futex/fsync' is implemented.
In the new version:
- Synchronization with the Wine 7.0 release has been completed (the previous branch was based on Wine 6.3). Accumulated specific patches from Proton have been merged into the upstream Wine. The DXVK layer, which translates calls to the Vulkan API, has been updated to version 1.9.4. VKD3D-Proton, a fork of vkd3d created by Valve to improve Direct3D 12 support in Proton, has been updated to version 2.5-146. The wine-mono package has been updated to version 7.1.2.
- Support for local video decoding in H.264 format has been added.
- Support for the Linux module of the anti-cheat system Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC), which is used to enable the launch of Windows games with anti-cheat enabled, has been added. Easy Anti-Cheat allows launching an online game in a special isolation mode, verifying the integrity of the game client and detecting intrusions into the process and memory manipulations.

Additionally, it can be noted that for the Steam Deck gaming console, which is based on Linux, support for 591 games has been confirmed. 337 games are marked as manually verified by Valve (Verified). Out of the verified games, 267 (79%) do not have a native version for Linux and run using Proton.
