Valve has released an update for Proton 8.0-2, which is based on the Wine project codebase and aimed at enabling the launch of Windows games on Linux that are available in the Steam catalog. The project's developments are distributed under the BSD license.
Proton allows for the direct launch of gaming applications in the Linux Steam client that are only supplied for Windows. The package includes implementations of DirectX 9/10/11 (based on the DXVK package) and DirectX 12 (based on vkd3d-proton), operating through the translation of DirectX calls into the Vulkan API, provides improved game controller support, and enables fullscreen mode regardless of the resolutions supported by the games. To enhance the performance of multithreaded games, support for mechanisms such as 'esync' (Eventfd Synchronization) and 'futex/fsync' is implemented.
The new version addresses issues in games such as Baldur’s Gate 3, Divinity: Original Sin: Enhanced Edition, Divinity Original Sin II: Definitive Edition, Path of Exile, Elden Ring, and Red Dead Redemption 2. A memory leak that occurred when launching Trackmania and Ubisoft Connect has been fixed. The crashing problem with EA Launcher has also been resolved.
