Valve has released an update for the Proton 8.0-4 project, based on the Wine codebase and aimed at ensuring the launch of gaming applications created for Windows on Linux, which are available in the Steam catalog. The project developments are distributed under the BSD license.
Proton allows direct launching of gaming applications available only for Windows in the Linux Steam client. The package includes implementations of DirectX 9/10/11 (based on the DXVK package) and DirectX 12 (based on vkd3d-proton), working through the translation of DirectX calls into the Vulkan API, providing enhanced game controller support and the ability to use fullscreen mode independently of the resolutions supported in games. To increase the performance of multithreaded games, the 'esync' (Eventfd Synchronization) and 'futex/fsync' mechanisms are supported. Changes in the new version of Proton include:
- The DXVK layer, which translates calls to the Vulkan API, has been updated to version 2.3-5-g83dc4678. VKD3D-Proton, a fork of vkd3d created by Valve to enhance Direct3D 12 support in Proton, has been updated to version 2.10. The shader compiler has been synchronized with the latest vkd3d codebase. The dxvk-nvapi package has been updated to version 0.6.4. Wine has been updated to version 8.0.1.
