The Kubuntu developers have announced the discontinuation of the KDE session based on the X server in the basic environment. Starting with the release of Kubuntu 25.10, only the Wayland-based session will be included in the provided builds, and to use the session that utilizes the X server, you will need to manually install the plasma-session-x11 package from the repository. Support for running X11 applications using XWayland remains unchanged. A similar decision to discontinue the GNOME session based on X11 was made for the main Ubuntu Desktop build.
