During the development of LibreOffice 7.0, one of the major changes was the integration of Google's Skia library, as well as support for Vulkan rendering. This library is used for drawing the user interface and rendering text. This feature works on Windows and Linux. There are no updates regarding macOS yet.
According to Luboš Luňák from Collabora, the Cairo-based code is overly complex. Using Skia is simpler, even considering the patch required for Skia to use FcPattern for font selection.
It has been noted that text rendering for Linux and Windows using Skia needs further refinement, so it is unclear whether this method will be used by default in LibreOffice 7.0, which is expected to be released in early August. It is possible that it will remain an option, although the situation may change in the future.
