Russ Cox has announced his departure as the project leader for the Go programming language, a position he has held for the past 12 years. The reason for his departure is the desire to ensure leadership transition, without which the project risks stagnation. It is anticipated that this change in leadership will create conditions for project growth, allow for a new perspective, and enable a new step forward.
Russ Cox clarified that it is time for him to make a change, but he is not leaving the project and will continue to participate in development, albeit no longer as the leader. Following his departure from the leadership role, Russ plans to focus on the development of the bug tracking system, the Gaby bot for automatic responses to problem reports, and the Oscar platform for automating code maintenance.
Starting September 1st, Austin Clements will be responsible for the technical part of the development and will also lead the team working on Go at Google. Previously, Austin handled the compiler, runtime, and release management for the project. After Austin's promotion, Cherry Mui will now take responsibility for those components.
