Canonical has fired Till Kamppeter, the leader of the OpenPrinting project, which develops printing components for Linux and has been in charge of maintaining the CUPS printing server since 2021, after Apple lost interest in the project. Till is a co-founder of OpenPrinting and has been involved with the project since its inception in 2001. Since 2006, Till has been employed by Canonical, focusing on the development of the printing system for Linux.
Canonical did not comment on the dismissal, but it is believed that the decision is related to a reduction in remote employees or due to Till's engagement with an external project. According to Till, he received messages from more than 30 Canonical employees expressing confusion over the decision regarding his dismissal, as he had done significant work maintaining the printing stack and managing related print packages for Ubuntu.
Due to losing his job, Till faces the necessity to find a way to make a living and intends to seek funding for OpenPrinting from sponsors or find an employer that would allow him to work on the OpenPrinting project similarly to Canonical. There is also discussion of transitioning OpenPrinting to a funded organization under the Linux Foundation.
