After the release of the stable version of Linux 6.19, Linus Torvalds, as usual, made a release announcement. In particular, he officially confirmed that the next version of the kernel will be Linux 7.0, the successor to Linux 6.19.
Linus Torvalds wrote in the release announcement of Linux 6.19:
I have over thirty merge requests, and when the merge window opens — thanks to all maintainers. And, as many have realized, I’m starting to lose track of big numbers (I barely have enough fingers on my hands and feet), so the next kernel will be named 7.0.
So, tomorrow the update cycle for Linux 7.0 begins. The process of merging changes into Linux 7.0 will last for the next two weeks. The stable version of Linux 7.0 will be released in mid-April, and this kernel version will also be included in Ubuntu 26.04 LTS.
