28 years ago, Linus Torvalds announced the creation of a working prototype of the new operating system Linux during a teleconference on comp.os.minix. The system included the ported bash 1.08 and gcc 1.40, making it considered self-sufficient.
Linux was created as a response to MINIX, whose license did not allow the community to conveniently exchange developments (at that time, MINIX was positioned as an educational tool and was specifically limited in capabilities).
Initially, Linus planned to name his creation Freax (a combination of 'free', 'freak', and X (Unix)), but Ari Lemmke, who offered Linus help in publishing by hosting the OS archive on server named the directory containing it 'linux'.
The original license was 'restrictively non-commercial'; however, listening to the opinions of the growing community around the project, Linus agreed to use GPLv2.
