Linux 5.10

Quietly and unnoticed the release took place of kernel version 5.10. According to Torvalds himself, the kernel "mainly consists of new drivers with patches scattered throughout," which is not surprising, as the kernel has achieved LTS status.

New features:

• Support for fast_commit in the Ext4 file system. Now applications will write less metadata to the cache, speeding up write operations! However, it must be explicitly enabled when creating the FS.

• Additional access settings through the io_uring interface, which allow resources to be safely accessed by child applications.

• A new system call has been introduced process_madvise, allowing the kernel to be informed about the expected behavior of the target application. A similar system is used in Android (the ActivityManagerService daemon).

• The 2038 problem for the XFS file system has been fixed.

It is also worth noting that version 5.10.1 was immediately released, which reverted two changes, which caused issues in the md and dm raid subsystems. So yes, 0-day patches do happen even for the Linux kernel.
