Starting from 10.12.2024, the beta version of Linux Mint 21.3, codenamed 'Virginia', will be available for download. Some changes include:
- Snap Store disabled. For further information or instructions for re-enabling, you can find them at this link.
- Guest Sessions. You can enable guest sessions in the 'Login Window' utility, but this option is currently disabled by default.
- Touchpad Drivers. This release uses the 'libinput' driver by default (provided by the xserver-xorg-input-libinput package). In case of issues, there is an option to switch to the alternative 'synaptics' driver (provided by the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics package).
- The Cinnamon desktop environment is presented in version 6.0, which includes several new 'spices' add-ons, very early and experimental work on Wayland support, 75% scaling support, gesture improvements, and various other desktop enhancements.
- Wine. To install the full version of Wine, you need to enter the command apt install wine-installer in the terminal. This will also install wine-desktop-files, which will ultimately add menu items with launch buttons for regedit, for drive C:, and some other elements absent in the original Wine.
Linux Mint 21.3 continues to use the Linux kernel 5.15 LTS and is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS packages. The distribution is expected to receive security updates until 2027.
The following system requirements are specified for installing the distribution and comfortable operation:
- RAM 2 GB (4 GB recommended);
- Storage 20 GB (100 GB recommended);
- minimum screen resolution of 1024x768;
