Quietly and unobtrusively, a new version of Look4Sat, a satellite tracker for Android inspired by GPredict, has been released.
I finally found enough time between family and work to finish and release v4, which has been sitting in the develop branch for quite a while. The main changes include a completely revamped interface using Jetpack Compose and Material3, a shift to BottomNavigation, and support for adaptive interfaces on tablets. For now, the code leaves much to be desired, but I no longer have to jump between v3 and v4, so hopefully I will refine everything over time.
The application retrieves TLE data and information about transceivers from open sources: Celestrak, R4UAB, SatNOGS, and others. Currently, it allows tracking over 15,000 satellites (only a portion of which have open information about their transceivers). Look4Sat stores data and performs all calculations locally, has a built-in OSM map tile cache, and features file import functionality that allows it to work without the Internet. The application supports English, Russian, Ukrainian, Chinese, Spanish, and Sinhalese languages. The project is fully open-source and lacks analytics and advertisements, and I strive to use the least number of external dependencies.
