After 6 months of development, the LXQt 2.4.0 desktop environment (Qt Lightweight Desktop Environment) has been released, continuing the development of the LXDE and Razor-qt projects.
The LXQt interface follows the ideas of classic desktop organization but brings modern design and methods that increase usability. LXQt is marketed as a lightweight, modular, fast, and user-friendly environment that embodies the best features of LXDE and Razor-qt. The code is available on GitHub and is distributed under the GPL 2.0+ and LGPL 2.1+ licenses.
Pre-built versions are expected for Ubuntu (LXQt is offered by default in Lubuntu), Arch Linux, Fedora, openSUSE, Mageia, FreeBSD, ROSA, and ALT Linux.
Key changes
General
LXQt 2.4.0 mainly includes bug fixes and code cleanup, as well as a number of useful enhancements. Some new features and adjustments have already been added in point releases of many components since November.
The required versions of Qt have not changed, so it is still possible to assemble the environment in Debian "Trixie" and its derivative distributions.
LibFM‑Qt / PCManFM‑Qt
In the save dialog, the base name is now automatically highlighted in the "File name" field, allowing immediate renaming of the file.
In Wayland, consistent visibility of desktop elements is ensured when using multiple screen mode (now separate settings for "Hide desktop elements" can be assigned for each monitor).
Other minor fixes and improvements have been made.
LXQt‑Powermanagement
A separate monitor power-off timeout has been added for both AC and battery operation.
Unnecessary options have been removed from dropdown lists.
The overall layout of interface elements in power management settings (LXQt powermanagementsettings) has been improved.
LXQt Panel
The volume plugin now has a horizontal orientation and can display all available sound receivers. The default receiver volume can easily be adjusted using the mouse wheel or touchpad scroll on the icon in the panel.
A new volume panel plugin has been added.
Changes already included in version 2.3.3:
The overly strict checking of alternative icon themes in Qt 6.11 has been fixed.
The filter in the "Stylish Menu" now prioritizes lines that start headers: for example, entering "fir" will always show "Firefox" as the first result.
In Wayland, keyboard shortcut selectors in the panel menu have been disabled, and a hint on how to configure them has been added.
The issue with automatic hiding when dragging windows over the Task Manager and Show Desktop has been resolved.
LXQt Sessions
Session settings for X11 and Wayland have been separated. The latter is displayed only when the lxqt-wayland-session package is installed.
The main menu can now be opened in Wayland — you need to add the keyboard shortcut for lxqt-qdbus openmenu in the compositor settings.
LXQt Runner
The built-in calculator can now be launched by entering a number at the beginning of the line, not just after the equals sign.
Notifications
Temporary notifications (e.g., song titles from media players and similar) are no longer saved when 'Do Not Disturb' mode is active.
xdg-desktop-portal-lxqt
An access portal (org.freedesktop.impl.portal.Access) has been added.
QTerminal and QTermWidget
The behavior of custom tab names has been improved.
You can now add a keyboard shortcut for the lock button (i.e., 'keep open') in windowed mode.
Fixed the bug in bookmark file creation when adding new profiles.
The 'Nord' theme has been added.
Fixed the disappearance of 'Open/Copy link' items in the context menu.
Fixed the URL template — previously, URLs with closing parentheses would lead to a 404 error.
Implemented highlighting of all matches during search and improved the highlighting code.
Several more code fixes and improvements have been made.
Additional
Added implementation of the $XDG_STATE_HOME directory.
Fixed the handling of NotShowIn=LXQt in .desktop files.
Added support for logging out through SystemdProvider.
