Arnd Bergmann, responsible for kernel packages at SUSE, has prepared patches to remove approximately 55 thousand lines of code related to the support of outdated ARM platforms that are rarely used and hinder the maintenance of current subsystems. The platforms slated for removal include sa1100, omap24xx, i.MX31, samv7, lpc18xx, riscpc, axxia, footbridge, old pxa boards, orion, dove, and mv78xx0, along with chips lacking a memory management unit (MMU) and microcontrollers stm32f4/f7/h7. The removal of the specified platforms is planned in kernel 7.5, expected in the first quarter of 2027, to avoid removal in the LTS kernel and give users time to state their continued use of certain systems to prevent their deletion.
