Developers of the Raspberry Pi project May distribution update (Raspbian), based on the Debian 10 'Buster' package base. Three builds are prepared for download — a minimal one () for server systems, a desktop version (), and a full version with an additional set of applications (2.5 GB). The distribution comes with a user environment (a fork of LXDE). About 35,000 packages are available for installation from .

- The distribution has been renamed from Raspbian to Raspberry Pi OS;
- an experimental 64-bit build that allows for the use of all available memory on the version of the board , supplied with 8 GB of RAM;
- A Bookshelf application has been added, providing access to magazines and books published by Raspberry Pi Press (from the app, you can purchase physical versions or download PDFs for free);
- To simplify usage for people with impaired vision, a screen magnifier application has been included. The application was built from scratch as existing implementations were not satisfactory to developers. The program can be installed by selecting Magnifier in the Universal Access section of the Recommended Applications app. It can be launched using the Ctrl-Alt-M combination or the icon on the right side of the taskbar. In the settings, you can choose the shape and size of the magnifying glass and the zoom level.
- The representation of sound output devices in the ALSA subsystem has changed. Instead of a single generic device for HDMI and headphone jack, two different devices are now offered. By default, HDMI output is used. To change the active audio output device, you can use the volume control applet or explicitly define the device in the .asoundrc file (for the headphone jack, you should specify 'defaults.pcm.card 1' and 'defaults.ctl.card 1').
