GNOME developers have summarized the work carried out in the project over the past week. The maintainer of the Nautilus file manager (GNOME Files) published plans for creating an implementation of the file chooser interface (Nautilus.org.freedesktop.impl.portal.FileChooser), which can be used in applications instead of the file open dialogs provided by GTK (GtkFileChooserDialog). Compared to the GTK implementation, the new interface will provide behavior and visual design closer to GNOME, utilizing elements and extended capabilities of the GNOME platform, such as libadwaita and the ability to mark favorite files with a star.
Sam Hewitt, a UI designer from the GNOME project, has published a mockup of the installer interface for operating systems.
Work has been done to enable printing for WebKitGTK and Epiphany/GNOME Web using the Freedesktop portal Print, which will facilitate printing when installed from a flatpak package.
Changes have been proposed for the GDM display manager and GNOME Shell to implement a secure screen lock mode, where the encrypted home directory is unmounted, and keys for its encryption are removed from memory (data remains in an unencrypted state during lock). This capability is available for systems using the systemd-homed service to manage portable home directories.
The release of package Junction 1.8 has been published, featuring an application selection interface displayed for choosing the handler when attempting to open a file or link. The new version is built on GNOME 46 and offers improved support for portrait mode and touch screens for mobile devices.
