MicroPythonOS 0.18 Released, a GUI OS for Microcontrollers

MicroPythonOS 0.18.0 is now available. It develops an operating system for microcontrollers such as the ESP32, written using the MicroPython toolkit. The operating system features a graphical interface designed with Android and iOS, and supports touchscreen or navigation buttons. MicroPythonOS's intended applications include Internet of Things (IoT) devices, home automation systems, interactive panels, robots, and smart wearables with gesture-based controls. The project can also be used for rapid prototyping of new devices. The code is written in C and Python and is licensed under the MIT license.

MicroPythonOS offers a minimal core system responsible for initialization and interaction with hardware, mounting storage devices, multitasking, and the user interface. All other functionality, such as Wi-Fi setup and updating, is contained within apps. The core suite includes an app menu, a configurator, a Wi-Fi setup widget, and an app installer and updater.

Applications are supported using MicroPython (a stripped-down version of Python 3) and a subset of Python libraries. External applications distributed through the centralized App Store can be installed (for example, an image viewer and camera app are distributed through the App Store). Updates are delivered over the air (OTA). Support is provided for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio codecs, IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) sensors, touchscreens, and cameras.

Among the changes in the new version:

  • Added support for the Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-LCD-3.5 board with a built-in 3.5-inch screen (320×480) and ES8311 audio codec.
  • A "Scan QR" button has been added to the AppStore app catalog. This button allows you to scan a QR code with an app ID (https://badgehub.eu/page/project/APP_ID, micropythonos://app/APP_ID, or mpos://app/APP_ID) and display detailed information about the app. The camera app now recognizes app links when scanning QR codes and provides a dialog box for accessing the app catalog.
  • AppManager provides the ability to bind URL handlers to applications.
  • The music player now supports a looped playback flag on all platforms. Support for sound systems connected via the I2S (Inter-IC Sound) bus has been improved.
  • The font manager now supports caching of emoji codes.
  • TaskManager now tracks the status of running tasks and restarts them upon shutdown. Auto-restart mode has been applied to the aiorepl console.
  • Added compression for static file system archives (freezefs --compress), and enabled cleaning of pycache files and backups left in the build environment, reducing the firmware size by 39 KB. Enabled compression for Montserrat 10-18 fonts, saving 19 KB.
