Microsoft rolled out the Azure cloud region in Israel without much fanfare. The official announcement was taken down. It was reported that the new region includes three Azure availability zones, providing customers with added redundancy, as the region has autonomous power, network, and cooling systems that collectively enhance fault tolerance in the data center. The Central Israel region is shown as active on the Azure regions page. Although Microsoft was the first among American cloud providers to announce plans to launch a region in Israel, it ended up being the last to actually open a cloud region in the country. Microsoft announced plans to open its first data centers in Israel in 2020. The facilities were expected to launch in 2021 in the Modiin area between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, but in 2021, local media reported that the opening of the region was postponed to early 2022.
