In May, the Windows 10 operating system will receive a search tool similar to Spotlight in macOS. To enable it, the PowerToys utility must be installed, which simplifies certain tasks and is designed for advanced users.
It is reported that the new search tool will replace the Run dialog, which is triggered by the Win + R key combination. By entering queries in the pop-up field, users will be able to quickly find files and applications stored on their computer. Developers also promise support for plugins like a calculator and dictionary. Simple calculations and word translations and definitions can be done without launching specialized applications.
Microsoft has been developing the new search tool since January 2020. Currently, it only performs functions akin to the search box in the Start menu. In the future, the company intends to enhance it to make it more convenient and functional than the Spotlight search tool in macOS.
The development of the new search tool involves the creators of , which can already be installed as an advanced search tool for Windows 10. The design of the search bar was conceived by designer Niels Laute in February.
The new search tool will be included in the PowerToys toolset. Currently, it consists of six tools: FancyZones, File Explorer, Image Resizer, PowerRename, Shortcut Guide, and Window Walker. All of them simplify the use of the computer. For example, the PowerRename utility allows users to rename multiple file names in a folder at once.
The PowerToys utility set has existed since the days of Windows 95 and Windows XP. The first public version of PowerToys for Windows 10 was released in September 2019.
