Microsoft has officially released the first builds of the updated Edge browser online. Currently, this concerns the Canary version and the Developer version. The Beta is promised to be released soon and will be updated every 6 weeks. Updates on the Canary channel will be daily, while on Dev — weekly.
The new version of Microsoft Edge is based on the Chromium engine, allowing it to use Chrome extensions. It features synchronization of bookmarks, browsing history, and previously installed plugins using a Microsoft account.
Additionally, the new version includes smooth scrolling for web pages, integration with Windows Hello, and improved functionality for the touch keyboard. However, the changes are not just internal. The new browser boasts a signature Fluent Design style, with promises of enhanced tab customization and support for handwritten input in the future.
"We are working directly with Google teams and the Chromium community and value collaborative and open discussions. Some features are not yet fully presented in the browser that you can install today, so stay tuned for updates," said Joe Belfiore, corporate vice president at Microsoft.
Currently, only English builds for 64-bit Windows 10 are available. Future support for Windows 8, Windows 7, and macOS is expected. The Canary and Dev versions can be downloaded from the official Redmond corporation site. It’s important to note that the new browser is still in testing, so it may contain bugs. In other words, it is not advisable to use it for regular work.
