Microsoft has introduced a new version of the open-source monospace font Cascadia Code 2404.23, optimized for use in terminal emulators and code editors. The font is notable for supporting programmable ligatures, which allow the creation of new glyphs by combining existing characters. Such glyphs are supported in the open editor Visual Studio Code and enhance code readability.
This is the first update of the project in the last two and a half years. The font's source components are distributed under the OFL 1.1 (Open Font License), permitting unlimited modification, including commercial use, printing, and website applications. Files are available for download in TrueType (TTF) format.
Improvements in the new version include the addition of 1140 new glyphs, featuring images used in pseudographics and ASCII art, segmented numbers divided into parts (quadrants, sextants, octants), elements for formatting large text, and some symbols used in outdated systems. The total number of glyphs has increased to 9209. Variants of the font 'Cascadia Code NF' and 'Cascadia Mono NF', corresponding to Nerd Fonts, are also available.
