The Linux kernel supplied in WSL2 is based on version 4.19 and runs in a Windows environment using a virtual machine that is already utilized in Azure. Updates for the Linux kernel are delivered through Windows Update and are tested within Microsoft’s continuous integration infrastructure. The prepared patches include optimizations to reduce kernel boot time, decrease memory consumption, and keep only the minimum necessary set of drivers and subsystems in the kernel.
Additionally, Microsoft to be included in the closed mailing list linux-distros, which publishes information about new vulnerabilities at an early stage of their discovery, allowing distributions to prepare for fixes before public disclosure. Access to the mailing list is necessary for Microsoft to receive information about new vulnerabilities affecting distribution-like builds such as Azure Sphere, Windows Subsystem for Linux v2, and Azure HDInsight, which are not based on existing distributions.
