Microsoft Opens Source Code for Layer Translating Direct3D 9 Commands to Direct3D 12

Microsoft has announced the release of the source code for the D3D9On12 layer, which implements a Device Driver Interface (DDI) that translates Direct3D 9 (D3D9) commands into Direct3D 12 (D3D12) commands. This layer enables older applications to run in environments that only support D3D12, and could be useful for implementing D3D9 based on the vkd3d and VKD3D-Proton projects, which provide a Direct3D 12 implementation for Linux that operates by translating D3D12 calls into the Vulkan graphics API. The D3D9On12 code is written in C++ and published under the MIT license.

The project is based on the code of a similar subsystem included in Windows 10. It is noted that the publication of the D3D9On12 code will allow community members to participate in fixing bugs and adding optimizations, and it may also serve as an example for studying the implementation of DDI drivers for D3D9 and as a framework for creating similar layers for translating various graphics APIs to D3D12.

At the same time, a DXBC Signer package has been released, allowing arbitrary DXBC files generated by third-party tools to be signed. D3D9On12 uses this package to sign the DXBC files generated during shader conversion to the new model.
