Windows Lite is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated products from Microsoft. However, it seems that users will have to be patient and wait some more. How , work on supporting Win32 applications has not progressed as expected at the company. This will prevent Windows Lite from running classic versions of programs, greatly limiting its applicability.
It is noteworthy that one of the problems is the launch of Microsoft Edge based on Chromium within the new OS. The original version of Edge, developed on the EdgeHTML engine, is deeply integrated into Windows Lite, which raises the question of replacement. Consequently, the company has a significant amount of work to ensure the browser functions properly. This necessitates support for Win32 applications.
Regarding the new timelines, sources claim that Microsoft plans to begin a new phase of internal testing by the end of this year. This means that a public announcement should not be expected before 2020, as testing will take time. Currently, it is known that Windows Lite is being tested on Surface devices, including Surface Go and Surface Pro 6.
The OS itself will not be released as a standalone system. It is positioned as a Full Flash Update, meaning it will be pre-installed on devices by default. In particular, it could serve as the software foundation for a dual-screen laptop called Centaurus. Of course, this is contingent on the project receiving the 'green light.' The system will also compete with Chrome OS.
It is worth noting that Windows Lite is intended to replace the unsuccessful Windows 10 S as well as, to some extent, Windows RT. Although the 'ten' can work on ARM processors, such solutions are currently expensive and impractical. Perhaps the 'lighter' version will help expand the audience.
