Previously, Microsoft's Windows division president Pavan Davuluri , stated that the company has a large-scale strategy to restore user trust in Windows 11. This trust has been lost due to the relentless integration of artificial intelligence features at the expense of core principles — performance and reliability. The initiative to address these shortcomings has been internally dubbed Windows K2, the resource reported citing its own sources.
Windows K2 refers not to any separate OS but to an ongoing initiative designed to ensure high and stable quality for current and future versions of Windows. The three main focuses of the initiative are performance, quality, and reliability. These define the overall work on Windows — if any one of them indicates a shortfall, the entire product suffers.
The company commits to considering feedback from users and Windows Insider program participants, analyzing telemetry data, and conducting focus groups with clients. An important part of the Windows K2 initiative is the restructuring of all departments — it is crucial not only to address feedback by fixing Windows 11 issues but also to recognize the contribution of each department; this indicates a significant cultural shift within the company.
Rapid development of new features will no longer be a priority — they will not appear in public preview builds until they reach a certain quality level. This principle existed before, but now the bar has been raised. Microsoft will strengthen its ties with the community: there will be meetings for Windows Insider program participants, and Windows developers will become more open on social media and forums, providing direct answers to questions and user feedback.
The focus is shifting to the performance of Windows 11: the company has acknowledged that it has caused a decrease in speed while gaming, in the File Explorer, and even in user interface elements like context menus. Currently, Windows 10 runs faster than Windows 11, and Microsoft is working to fix this. As for gaming, the benchmark is Valve's steamOS, which demonstrates higher performance in this regard, and the issue may only be resolved in two or three years. The File Explorer benchmark is the third-party app File Pilot.
Improvements are also expected for the Windows Update Center — it will become standard for computers to reboot no more than once a month. The updates themselves will become less noticeable — display and sound drivers will only update during reboot, not while the computer is actively running. The number of unnecessary applications in Windows 11 will be reduced to minimize memory usage by the system, allowing for increased speed on both low and high-end machines as well as portable gaming consoles.
Finally, an acceleration of the user interface is anticipated. A key focus of Windows K2 is the redesign and optimization of WinUI 3: elements of the package will appear in a greater number of system components — this will affect the taskbar and control panel. Moreover, mechanisms to reduce latency and minimize memory load will ensure the functionality of basic features such as the Start menu, even under high system load. Notably, advertisements will disappear from the Start menu. There is no set completion date for the Windows K2 initiative — it is a long-term project, a set of principles that determine which aspects become priorities.
