The developers of the MinIO project, which creates a high-performance object storage compatible with the Amazon S3 API, have announced that the repository will now operate in maintenance mode. From now on, only critical vulnerability fixes will be included in the open codebase, while changes related to new features and bug fixes will remain in a private repository, which serves as the basis for the commercial version. Users who need support or an actively maintained version are recommended to switch to the proprietary product MinIO AIStor.
Previously, MinIO developers expressed dissatisfaction with their projects being used in third-party proprietary products without fulfilling AGPL license conditions and without attribution (for example, one company attempted to sell a complete clone of MinIO, advertising it as more efficient than MinIO). The current codebase remains under the AGPL 3.0 license, and interested parties can create a fork and develop it independently if they wish. Among existing open alternatives, AIStore, Garage, Ambry, SeaweedFS, RustFS, hs5, and Versity S3 Gateway can be noted.
