An international group of scientists led by British colleagues for data transmission speed over regular optical fiber. Previously, they at a level of 302 Tbps, while the new mark has been set at 402 Tbps. An important aspect of this achievement is that the experiment used standard commercial fiber, which promises to boost the speed of existing networks.

Despite the progress made in optical communication, the demand for bandwidth is increasing from both companies and authorities as well as ordinary citizens. This issue is addressed with funding, but everyone prefers to avoid additional costs. The solution proposed by the scientists lies precisely in this domain — bandwidth can be increased without changing the infrastructure, although new transmission and reception equipment will obviously need to be used. However, this is clearly not comparable to the costs of laying new optical transmission lines.
The proposal from researchers at Aston University, Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), and Nokia Bell Labs in the USA is based on expanding data transmission bands. Traditionally, optical fibers operated in the C and L wave bands. Then, researchers added two more bands: E and S. Finally, in this new work, they engaged two additional bands — O and U. The latter was the most challenging to implement, as there are no corresponding receivers and transmitters available commercially. The British team of scientists had to independently develop and manufacture the equipment.
Dr. Phillips from Aston University said: "This discovery could help increase the bandwidth of a single optical fiber, allowing the world to obtain a more efficient system. The recently developed technology is expected to significantly contribute to the expansion of optical communication infrastructure capacity, as future data transmission services will quickly increase demand."
