Mozilla officially released an updated component for WebThings — a universal hub for smart home devices, called WebThings Gateway. This firmware for routers with open-source code is designed with privacy and security in mind.
Experimental builds of WebThings Gateway 0.9 are available on GitHub for the Turris Omnia router. Firmware is also supported for the Raspberry Pi 4 single-board computer. Currently, it is referred to as having basic functionality, although in the future this system may evolve into a full-fledged firmware.
The WebThings Gateway distribution is based on OpenWrt, a Linux operating system designed for embedded devices. It is aimed at standard consumer routers and can be used in Wi-Fi access points. The source code and all data on GitHub.
the 0.9 build introduced new notification capabilities for homeowners. For example, the system can be configured to send an email alert when motion is detected in the house while the owners are away.
The previous version of WebThings Gateway, numbered 0.8, was able to record and visualize data from connected smart home sensors, and received new alerts in case of fire, smoke, or unauthorized entry.
Overall, the smart home and Internet of Things themes continue to develop. The fact that Mozilla is working on open-source software for gateways is quite encouraging. After all, the market is often dominated by proprietary solutions that only work within their own ecosystem.
