Mozilla has decided not to renew its contract with the marketing company Leanplum, under which telemetry was sent from the mobile versions of Firefox for Android and iOS. By default, telemetry was enabled for about 10% of users in the U.S. Information about telemetry transmission was displayed in the settings and available for opt-out (in the 'Data collection' menu under 'Marketing data'). The contract with Leanplum expires on May 31, and until then, Mozilla plans to disable integration with Leanplum services in its products.
At servers Leanplum received a randomly generated unique program identifier (the server could also take the user's IP address into account), as well as data on when the user opened or saved bookmarks, created new tabs, used the Pocket service, cleared data, saved passwords, downloaded files, logged into their Firefox account, took screenshots, interacted with the address bar, and used search recommendations. Additionally, information was transmitted regarding the activation of sync, setting Firefox as the default browser, and the presence of Firefox Focus, Klar, and Pocket apps on the device. This information was collected to optimize the browser's interface and functionality based on real user behavior and needs.
