Mozilla has announced the readiness of the infrastructure and add-ons catalog for the Android version of Firefox. Firefox for Android is the first mobile browser with a fully open ecosystem of add-ons.
At the beginning of November, it was planned to adapt around 200 add-ons for the Android version of Firefox by the time the catalog was launched, but the plan was exceeded, and on the official opening day of the catalog, 489 add-ons were available for installation. The ultimate goal is to implement support in the mobile version of the browser for all existing add-ons listed on addons.mozilla.org (AMO).
Until recently, Firefox for Android supported only about 20 add-ons, primarily running in the main thread. To ensure that errors in add-ons do not affect the browser's stability, Firefox for Android has introduced support for a multi-process mode, where add-ons run in a separate process, not affecting the user interface or page operations in the browser. Work is also ongoing to transfer the missing APIs for add-on developers from the desktop version of Firefox to the Android version.
Add-on developers whose products are already supplied for the desktop version of Firefox are encouraged to adapt and optimize their products for the mobile version. It is suggested to transition from the constant background execution model (extension.getBackgroundPage) to the event-driven mode (browser.runtime.onMessage.addListener).
