Alongside the translation of the GNOME OS distribution to use the systemd-sysupdate component for atomic system updates, the development of a new installer for GNOME OS has begun. The development is still at the initial prototype stage, based on the design mockups published in April, prepared by the GNOME project designers. At this stage of development, the main focus is on the overall architecture and determining the internal logic, such as navigation organization and the order of page display during installation preparation. The installer code is being developed in Rust and is distributed under the GPLv3 license.
GNOME OS is an experimental distribution for GNOME developers and testers that allows them to assess the state of desktop environment development, explore emerging new features, and test their applications in the development branches of GNOME.
