In Russia, the development of a training platform for system programmers — BMPOS (Basic Modular Platform for Operating Systems) — is underway, designed and created as a teaching aid for operating system development with a comprehensive theoretical and practical foundation. Within the project, a modular core is being developed, fundamentally different from existing kernels and specifically designed for studying the process of operating system development. The OS code is written in C and distributed under the MIT-like state open license (GOL).
The development aims to provide learners with knowledge of the minimally necessary codebase, to foster skills in constructing simple and understandable architectures, and to maximize code simplicity. The OS has a small size for its binary files, which contributes to achieving high reliability and simplifying the build and testing processes.
The project does not aim to support usage outside of virtual machines. Only modular assembly is supported with modules embedded at the compilation stage. A full release of the platform is planned for February next year with a complete set of drivers, including guest extensions for Qemu and VirtualBox.
The first test release of the kernel features a memory manager, a video memory manager, and a module loader. Support for TGA screens has been implemented. Instructions for building and launching have been added. Work continues on a task manager and an input-output thread system. Upcoming plans include creating drivers for keyboards, SATA (ACHI), and the EXT2 file system.
