The first alpha release of the installer for the upcoming major Debian release, 'Trixie', has been presented. The Debian 13 release is expected in the summer of 2025.
Key changes:
- Support for the RISC-V architecture (riscv64) has been added.
- Support for the mipsel architecture has been discontinued — the port for this architecture has been removed from the repositories. Mipsel was one of the oldest supported ports of Debian, with only the port for i386 processors being older.
- Building the installer for the armel and i386 architectures has been discontinued (support for these architectures remains in the repositories).
- Transition to a 64-bit time_t type on 32-bit architectures has been completed (the year 2038 problem has been addressed).
- The interface for creating a root account and adding the first user has been revamped.
- Improvements have been made to the components responsible for partitioning storage devices. A new heuristic for automatic partitioning and selection of swap partition size has been proposed, taking into account the specific usage of the distribution on small-sized storage devices.
- A new splash screen and Ceratopsian theme have been implemented.
