After almost five years since the last release, alpha testing of the Slackware 15.0 distribution has started. The project has been in development since 1993 and is the oldest existing distribution. Its features include a lack of complexity and a simple initialization system in the style of classic BSD systems, making Slackware an interesting solution for studying the workings of Unix-like systems, conducting experiments, and getting acquainted with Linux. A bootable image has been prepared for download, sized at 3.1 GB (x86_64), along with a build for running in Live mode.
The new branch is notable for updating the system library Glibc to version 2.33 and using the Linux kernel 5.10. With few exceptions, the remaining packages have been carried over from the Current branch and rebuilt with the new Glibc. For instance, the rebuild of firefox, thunderbird, and seamonkey has been postponed because they require additional patches for compatibility with the new Rust compiler used in the distribution.
